We performed panretinal photocoagulation on 118 eyes of 77 patients of diabetic retinopathy with macular involvement when seen by fluorescein angiography. Simultaneous macular photocoagulation was performed on 83 eyes and not on 35 eyes. Photocoagulation was completed in 3 sessions, each with an interval of 3 weeks or longer. After an average of 14.6 months, visual acuity in the former group of 83 eyes improved or remained unchanged in 59 eyes (71%) and deteriorated in 24 eyes (29%) . In the latter group of 35 eyes, it improved or remained unchanged in 21 eyes (60%) and deteriorated in 14 eyes (40%) . The findings show that panretinal with paramacular photocoagulation may be effective in preventing the development or progression of maculopathy in diabetic retinopathy.
