  • Look Inside

We reviewed the incidence of ocular complications and visual outcome in 87 patients of herpes zoster involving the ophthalmic branch of trigeminal nerve. The series comprised 37 males and 50 females. Their ages averaged 61.8 years. Ocular complications included conjunctivitis 68%, scleritis 9%, keratitis 21%, iridocyclitis 20% and elevated intraocular pressure 6%. Nose eruptions, or Hutchinson's sign, were present in 15 cases (17%) . Patients with nose eruptions showed significantly higher incidences of all items of ocular complications than those without. The final visual outcome was generally favorable. Ocular complications developed more frequently in patients aged 80 years or over, in cases with nose eruptions and in those who did not receive systemic acyclovir during the early stage of the disease.
