  • Look Inside

A 16-year-old female presented with blurring of vision in her right eye. She had had recurrent fever for the past 6 years and was diagnosed as chronic active Epstein-Barr virus infection. In both eyes, the visual acuity was intact and no changes were detected in the anterior chamber or optic media. The right eye showed swelling of the optic disc, dilated retinal veins and enlarged blind spot. Fluorescein angiography showed findings compatible with optic papillitis but no dye leakage from retinal vessels. Spontaneous recovery set in the papillitis with improved fluorescein angiographic findings. This case illustrates that persistent Epstein-Barr virus infection may involve the optic disc.
