  • Look Inside

We reviewed 26 eyes with diabetic macular edema with vitreous traction which underwent vitrectomy during the past 8 years. The ages averaged 56.2 years. The patients were followed up 7 to 61 months, average 23.4 months.Ef-fectiveness was definded as improvement in visual acuity by 3 lines or more. Viterectomy was effective in 14% of eyes with prior grid photocoagulation and in 58% of eyes without (p <0.05). It was effective in 27% of eyes with neovasculariza-tion and in 60% of eyes without. It was effective in 55% of eyes with gross hard exudate in the macula and 40% of eyes without. The presence or adsence of cystoid macular edema or epiretinal membrane did not affect the surgical outcome. The findings suggest that vitrectomy is more effective in eyes without neovasularization or prior to grid photocoagulation.
