  • Look Inside

We screened the inhabitants in a town in southern part of Kumamoto Prefecture in Kyushu for eye diseases. Out of 6,000 residents, 1,343 persons participated in the program. Three cases showed active uveitis, of whom one was seropositive for human T-lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) . Review of charts in three local eye clinics showed two patients with HTLV-I uveitis. There were thus three patients with HTLV-I uveitis in the area. There appeared to be about 905 carriers of HTLV-I in the area, according to the screening data on the rate of seropositivity and the local population statistics. The incidence of HTLV-I uveitis was 3.3 per 1,000 HTLV-I carriers. The estimated rate of uveitis types other than due to HTLV-I was 1.1 per 1,000 HTLV-I carriers and 0.8 per 1,000 noncarriers.
