　Emery-Little核硬度分類を細分化した新しい核硬度分類法を用いて白内障手術予定眼1,000例を分類し，その有用性を検討した。新しい分類法はEmery-Little分類のグレード1〜5の各段階をさらに4等分し，細分化したものである。Phaco Chop^TM法を行うには，従来のEmery-Little分類では分類の程度が不十分と思われた。この新しい細分類法を用いれば，Phaco Chop^TM法における適切なフックの深さ，核分割数を事前に予測することができた。また，分割された核片による後嚢破損の危険性を正確に評価できるため，術者の力量に合わせた適切な術式の選択も可能となった。

A modification of grading system by Emery-Little for nuclear hardness is proposed. By the modified system, each of the five grades by Emery-Little in subdivided into four subtypes (17). The new system was prospectively applied to cataract surgery in 1000 eyes. This method facilitated proper selection of the depth of hook for performing Phaco Chop^TH technique and to predict the number of fractured nucleus, which is one of the risks of posterior capsulav rupture.
