  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We observed the lipid layer of tear film in 34 eyes with dry eye and 13 normal eyes. The lipid layer was classified into 5 grades based on specific interference color. Grade 1: grayish color and uniform distribution. Grade 2: grayish color with uneven distribution. Grade 3: two or more colors, uneven distribu-tion. Grade 4: numerous colors. Grade 5: visible corneal surface. Normal eyes showed either Grade 1 or 2 pattern. No dry eye showed Grade 1 pattern. There was a significant correlation between the grading and other examination modalities including fluorescein staining, rose bengal staining, Schirmer's test 1 and tear film breakup time.
