We treated 59 eyes with corneal dystrophy by excimer laser ablation of the cornea at the wavelength of 193nm. The series included granular dystrophy 29 eyes, lattice dystrophy 12, gelatinous drop-like dystrophy 7 and band keratopathy 11. Eyes with granular and lattice dystrophies showed marked improvement in corrected visual acuity. In eyes with gelatinous drop-like dystrophy, the treatment relieved ocular irritation due to irregularity of the corneal surface. Subepithelial corneal opacity could be removed in eyes with band keratopathy, while the posttreatment visual acuity depended on preexisting ocular complications. There were no postoperative healing problems in the regeneration of corneal epithelium except mild subepithelial opacity in some eyes. All the treated eyes showed significant hyperoptic shift. The findings show the efficacy of excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomy on some types of corneal dystro-phy.
