We evaluated the mechanical characteristics of a monitoring system of ocular motility utilizing infra-red differential reflection from the corneal limbus. We measured the electric potential from a model eye dependent on different eye directions. The precision error was 0.25 degrees (s. d.), when the photocells were placed 12mm from the model eye. When the distance became less, the sensitivity became higher and the precision improvedexponentially. The linearity was excellent within ±10 degrees from the center. The error in linearity became conspicuous at ±15 degrees or greater. Over the range of ±20 degrees, the relation between the angle of rotation and the output voltage became reversed. This fault in linearity was presumably due to the passage of pupil beneath the photocell. In actual practice, this technique will have to be used so as to make best use of these fundamental features.
