  • Look Inside

We studied the anatomical features of vitreore-tinal interface in 120 human eyes after separating the internal limiting membrane (ILM) from the retina and the vitreous through treatment with proteaze enzyme. The treatment induced digestion of matrix of the vitreous cortex but not of the ILM. The anterior surface of ILM appeared as a sheet with numerous hemispherical protrusions. Under high magnification, these protrusions corresponded to broken sites of collagen fibers inserted in theILM from the vitreous cortex. This feature showed the continuity of the vitreous cortex and ILM in terms of collagen fibers. The posterior surface of ILM showed furrows and occasional impressions simulating a mosaic pattern. The impressions appeared to be footprints of Mueller cells. The collagen fibers in the ILM and the vitreous were the same in width at 20 nm. There was no discontinuity in the ILM at the site of transition from the optic disc to the retina.
