  • Look Inside

Systemic factors were evaluated in 59 patients with retinal vein occlusions during the foregoing 7 -year period. The series included 15 cases of central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) , 10 males and 5 females, and 44 cases of branch one (BRVO), 22 males and females each. The age of patients with CRVO averaged 65.2 years.

No significant differences were present between CRVO and BRVO regarding age, sex, erythrocyte count, serum proteins, systemic blood pressure, body weight, smoking or drinking habits. Caseswith CRVO showed decrease in albumin-globulin ratio in the serum and increase in α1 and α2 globulins as compared with the control. Current or previous hypertension was present in 80% of cases with CRVO and in 61% of those with BRVO. In female patients, 92% were nonsmokers and 88% were nondrinkers. In male patients, 47% were nonsmokers and 43% were nondrinkers. Smoking or drinking habits seemed to be not related with retinal vein occlusions.
