We quantitated plasma levels of substances related to vasospasm in 42 patients with retinal vein occlusions. The series included central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) 12 cases and branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) 30 cases. BRVO was as-sociated with and without vitreous hemorrhage in 12 and 18 cases respectively.

We observed higher levels of endotheline-1 in CRVO and BRVO than in control. Endotheline-1 is considered to be a marker of endothelium-derived contracting factor (EDCF). Its value was particu-larly higher in cases of BRVO with vitreous hemor-rhage than in control (p<0.01). It was also elevated in cases with vitreous hemorrhage secondary to trauma or retinal tear formation.

There were no significant changes in plasma levels of 6-ketoprostaglandin F, which is thought to be a parameter of endothelium-derived retractir-g factor (EDRF).
