We treated 113 eyes with retinal branch vein occlusion in its acute stage by laser photocoagula-tion. We used blue-green argon in 27 eyes, red krypton in 32, dye 610 nm defocal system in 22 and dye 610 nm parfocal system in 32 eyes. Presence of macular edema threatening central vision was a major criterium for eligibility in this study.

Ophthalmoscopically, early resolution of hemor-rhage and macular edema resulted in almost all the eyes. Visual acuity improved by 2 lines or more in 46 eyes, remained unchanged in 43 and deteriorated in 24. It took an average of 13 months for the visual acuity to stabilize in the improved group. Fre-quency of side effects depended on the wavelength and the focussing system. Nerve fiber layer defects occurred 37% in argon, 9% in krypton, 23% in dye defocal system and 6% in dye parfocal system. Overcoagulation in the outer retinal layer resulted in 37% in argon, 25% in krypton, 0% in dye group.

All laser modalities were thus effective but in-duced variable side effects regarding wavelength and focussing system. Parfocal system was less injurious than defocal one. Wavelength at 610nm was better than shorter ones.
