Abstract Purpose:To report refractive errors following phacovitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD).

Subjects and Method:This study included 66 eyes of 66 patients who received phacovitrectomy for RRD:40 with macula OFF RRD and 26 with macula ON RRD. Fifty eyes that underwent cataract surgery only served as controls. The intraocular lens(IOL)power was determined by measuring the axial length with ultrasonography or laser interference biometry(IOLMaster). We retrospectively examined the refractive errors after surgery.

Results:In the ultrasound group, the refractive error was myopic in all of the macula ON, macula OFF, and cataract cases, but no significant difference was seen among the groups.

In the IOLMaster group, the refractive error of the macular OFF cases was large, and a significant difference was observed between macula ON and cataract cases. In the macula ON and cataract cases, the refractive error in the ultrasound group became more myopic than that in the IOL master group, and a significant difference was found in the cataract cases. In the macula OFF cases, the IOL master group had a larger refractive error than the ultrasound group.

Conclusion:In phacovitrectomy for RRD, it is necessary to determine the IOL power while considering the postoperative refractive error with extra caution in case of macular detachment.
