Abstract Purpose:To report factors related to recurrence of diabetic macular edema following intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF preparation.

Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 19 eyes of 19 cases who responded to intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF preparation and who could be followed up for one year or longer in the past 41 months. The series comprised 9 males and 10 females. The age ranged from 51 to 82 years and averaged 65 years. Six eyes showed no recurrence for over one year and 13 eyes showed recurrence within one year of treatment.

Results:There was no difference between no-recurrence and recurrence group regarding age, initial visual acuity, level of HbAlc at the start of treatment, or central retinal thickness before or during treatment. Number of sessions of anti-VEGF treatment averaged 3.0±0.6 in no-recurrence group and 1.8±0.8 in recurrence group. The difference was significant(p=0.0026). When observed by optical coherence tomography(OCT), macular edema of cystoid type was more frequent in non-recurrence than recurrence group.

Conclusion:Treatment of diabetic macular edema by intravitreal injection of anti-VEGF preparation, eyes that showed no recurrence for one year were characterized by more frequent injection and by manifesting macular edema of cystoid type than eyes that showed recurrence.
