Abstract Purpose:Retinal vasoproliferative tumors(RVPT)is a relatively rare disease involving proliferation of retinal bold vessels and glia cells. We report two cases of secondary epiretinal membrane(ERM)associated with RVPT.

Case 1:A 62-year-old man presented with an RVPT and a macular ERM. The ERM became thicker with the development of vitreoretinal traction after laser photocoagulation of the RVPT. We then performed vitrectomy and peeled the ERM.

Case 2:A 55-year-old woman presented with an angioma like tumor and a macular ERM. We performed vitrectomy to peel the ERM and trans-scleral cryotherapy for the RVPT.

Conclusions:We treated and histopathologically examined two cases of ERM associated with RVPT. In both cases, we observed positive staining of the ERM for CD31 and GFAP;in case 1, negative staining for PDGF was found but on hematoxylin eosin staining of the ERM, the presence of vascular lumina, endothelial cells, and pericytes was not confirmed. The findings are indicative of immature vascular components and similar to those of a proliferative membrane found in diabetic retinopathy. The ERM can proliferate rapidly if secondary to an RVPT. We therefore considered that early peeling of the ERM could improve the prognosis.
