Abstract. Purpose:To present a 10-year review of rhegmatognous retinal detachment with additional macular hole. Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 28 eyes of 28 cases who received initial surgery by us during 10 years through 2012. The series comprised 20 males and 8 females. Findings:The present 28 eyes approximated 2.1% of a total of 1,325 eyes that received vitreous surgery for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment during the same period. There was no difference in the age of onset or duration of retinal detachment before surgery between the two groups. An average of 3.3 retinal breaks was present in the 28 eyes. Proliferative vitreoretinopathy was pre-sent in 16 eyes(57%). Axial length in 28 cases averaged 24.0±1.8 mm in the affected and 24.6±1.4 mm in the fellow eyes. All the eyes were treated by vitreous surgery. Additional peeling of internal limi-ting membrane(ILM)was performed in 20 eyes. The retina became reattached in 27 eyes(96%). Macular hole closed in 17 eyes(61%). Visual acuity averaged 1.0 logMAR six months after surgery and was related with duration of retinal detachment. ILM peeling was not related with closure of macular hole or visual outcome. Conclusion:Coexistence of macular hole showed a higher incidence of PVR and resulted in poorer visual outcome in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. ILM peeling failed to improve the rate of closure of macular hole or visual outcome.
