Objective estimation of visual acuity in humans can be performed by optokinetic nystagmus (OKN), forced choice preferential looking (PL) and pattern visually evoked cortical potentials (PVECP). None of the three is satisfactory because OKN is a motor response from extrastriate sys-tems, PL requires reasonable attention of the sub-jects and PVECP involves a lengthy recording time. PVECPs appear to be the most promising. attemptsto develop rapid recording system for PVECPs are under way.

The present paper deals with the advantages and disadvantages of stimulus devices and recording methods for VECPs. The averaging method is cur-rently the best even in the recent trend to employ Fourier analysis, predictive filters and lock-in amplifier.
