  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

We observed 194 cases with retinal vein occlusion during a 12-month period through June 1987. We detected retinal vein occlusion in the fellow eye also in 13 cases (6.7%).

In the bilateral 13 cases, the age averaged 65.9-year-old. There were 9 females and 4 males. Branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) was present bilaterally in 11 cases. Central retinal vein occlu-sion (CRVO) was present in one. One casemanifested BRVO in one eye and CRVO in the other. The time lag between the onset of retinal vein occlusion in both eyes averaged 3.9 years.

In 12 cases with BRVO in the contralateral eye, the macula was spared from BRVO in 7 cases. All the 13 cases in the present series were hyper-tensive, while the incidence of systemic hyperten-sion was 65% in the whole 194 cases. Cases with retinal vein occlusion with hypertension need par-ticular care and close follow up because of the potential risk in the fellow eye.
