We evaluated the value of portable image intensi-fier as a night vision aid for patients with retinitis pigmentosa. We measured the visual recognition threshold in darkness as parameter for the extent of improvement.

In 10 normal subjects, use of image intensifier induced improvements in visual threshold by 2 log units in all measuring points throughout 25 minutes of dark adaptation. Similar improvements by 1.4 log units resulted in 16 patients with retinitis pig-mentosa. The amount of improvement was 1.2 log units and was therefore less satisfactory in patients with markedly constricted visual field.
