We evaluated the ocular fatigue and health com-plaints among workers using visual display terminals (VDT). A questionaire survey was conducted in 60 VDT workers and 45 clerical workers who served as control.

Questionaire studies showed a higher incidence of ocular fatigue in VDT workers than in controls. Among the 3 groups of operator, puncher and programmer, the first group complained of visual fatigue and asthenopia in a higher incidence than the other two groups.

Significant prolongation in relaxation time of accom-modation were found in VDT workers over clerical workers in the age range of 20 to 35 years when tested by accommodo-polyrecorder.

In another series of 22 VDT workers, prolonged wear of +0.5 D correction lenses for two weeks shortened the relaxation time of accommodation. This beneficial effect was absent in the control group.

When tested with color flicker test, VDT workers showed prolonged flicker fusion time for all color flickers compared with normal subjects. After continu-ous wear of +0.5 D lenses, VDT workers failed to show prolongation of flicker fusion time as observed in con-trols.

It is suggested that habitual wearing of +0.5 lenses would induce improvements in accommodation while engaged in VDT tasks.
