We determined the patterns of adenosine diphosphate (ADP)-and collagen-induced platelet aggregation in patients with simple diabetic retinopathy (59 cases), proliferative diabetic retinopathy (8) and 36 non-dia-betic subjects as control.
Cases with simple diabetic retinopathy (SDR) showed higher rates of maximum plate aggregation in response to low ADP concentrations (1 and 3μM) than controls (p<0.01). Several cases with SDR and all the cases with proliferative diabetic retinopathy manifested secondary aggregation induced by 0.5μM of collagen. The secondary aggregation was consistently absent in the controls.
These findings suggest that platelet aggregation in-duced by ADP and collagen of low concentration pro-mises to be of prognostic value in diabetic retinopathy. The secondary aggregation was consistently absent in the controls.
These findings suggest that platelet aggregation in-duced by ADP and collagen of low concentration pro-mises to be of prognostic value in diabetic retinopathy.
