We evaluated the echographic features of 15 eyes with endophthalmitis following perforating eye injury. We attempted to classify the B-mode echographic find-ings of traumatic endophthalmitis and to use the clas-sification as a guide in choosing the appropriate method of treatment and to predict the prognosis as to vision.

We could classify our cases into five stages : no abnormal findings (stage 0), membraneous opacity (stage I), small cystic opacity (stage II), cystic opac-ity (stage III) and cystic opacity with retinal detach-ment (stage IV).

We correlated the stage in each of the 15 cases with the final visual outcome. Ten eyes were treated by vitrectomy and the others were by antibiotics only. A relatively fair visual outcome of 0.1 or more resulted in eyes belonging to stages 0, I or II. Less favorable visual outcome was the rule in eyes belonging to stage III or IV.
