  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

To determine the optimum osmolarity in arti-ficial tears, tear osmolarity was evaluated in 60 patients with keratoconjunctivitis sicca (Sjögren) and in 32 normal subjects. The tear sample was taken by immersing a tip of filtering paper in the inferior cul-de-sac. A vapor pressure osmometer was used for measuring the tear osmolarity.

The tear osmolarity of 119 samples from patients averaged 299.5±16.7 (SD) mmol/kg, and that of 64 samples from normal subjects averaged 292.6± 14.7 mmol/kg. The osmolarity in patients was significantly higher than that in normal subjects.
