After the rapid ingestion of one liter of water, a reduction in blood osmolality of the order 7 to 11 milliosmoles results in about 45 to 60 minutes. In the normal eye, an increase in intraocular pressure of less than 6 mmHg occurs. An increase in ocular volume, or an increase in aqueous flow, is the probable mechanism for this pressure changs. Experiments with dogs, utilizing varied volumes of water as well as isosmotic saline cleary indicate the relationships of altered blood osmolality and intraocular pressure.
