　眼科領域には先天性ないし遺伝性疾患の種類が非常に多い。しかも近年に至るもそれら疾患の相対的頻度は減少せずに，むしろ増加の傾向にある^1）。

　眼科外来において，しばしば眼遺伝病の患者ないしは家族その他から遺伝相談を受けるチャンスが少なくない。

Genetic counseling in ophthalmology is of particular potential usefulness due to the pre-sence of numerous genetically determined ocular diseases. A discussion is presented over the basic concepts and general problems in genetic counseling.
