  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

Aqueous solutions of histamine, acetylcholine and serotonin respectively were topically applied to eyes with vernal conjunctivitis, pruritus ofthe conjunctiva and epidemic keratoconjunctivitis with the view to assess the specific role of these agents in causing itchiness of the conjunctival mucosa.

In vernal conjunctivitis, instillation of 0.1% solution of histamine resulted in increased itchy sensation, hyperemia and pseudomembrane formation of the conjunctiva. In prutitus of the conjunctiva, instillation of 0.5% histamine solution resulted in a similar reaction.
