  • Look Inside

Examination of the fundus was carried out in 552 newborn babies within 24 hours after birth born through painless delivery by inhala-tion anesthesia with halothane.

Haemorrhages in the retina were found in 25.5% of the infants. They were generally localized around the optic disc or along larger vessels. The incidence of retinal haemorrhage was higher in babies born of multiparous mo-thers than in babies born of primiparous mo-thers. No retinal haemorrhage was observed in babies born through caesarean section. The incidence of retinal haemorrhages was high in premature and overterm infants.
