Abstract. Purpose:To report a case of recurrent ophthalmic herpes zoster sine herpete(ZSH)that responded to varicella vaccination. Case:A 65-year-old woman presented with right orbital pain since 2 days before. She had a history of herpes zoster in the right breast. Findings:She showed signs suggestive of ZSH. Ocular pain subsided after treatment with valaciclovir. She developed three recurrences during the following 12 months. She was negative for cutaneous test for varicella virus suggestive of decreased cellular immunity. Varicella vaccination was followed by disappearance of ocular pain. There has been no recurrence during 3 years until present. Conclusion:This case illustrates that ZSH may induce orbital pain. Varicella vaccination may be effective when cutaneous test is negative.
