Abstract. Purpose:To report the outcome of excimer laser phototherapeutic keratectomy(PTK). Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 69 eyes of 51 patients who received PTK during the past 10 years and who could be followed up for one year or over. The series comprised 23 male and 46 female eyes. They were aged 57 to 88 years, average 71 years,at the time of surgery. They were reviewed regarding best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA),refraction, and corneal thickness. Results:PTK was performed for Avellino corneal dystrophy in 45 eyes, band keratopathy in 20 eyes, and corneal leukoma in 4 eyes. BCVA improved in 42 eyes(61%)one year later. Improvement in BCVA was significant in eyes with Avellino corneal dystrophy and corneal leukoma. Refraction shifted towards hyperopia after keratectomy. Conclusion:Excimer laser PTK is effective for corneal lesions involving the anterior layers.
