Abstract. Purpose:To compare the visual outcome of age-related macular degeneration(AMD)following intravitreal injection of pegaptanib. Cases and Method:This study was made on 70 eyes of 70 patients of seen during the past 17 months. The series comprised 57 males and 13 females. The age averaged 73 years. Each case received twice or more intravitreal injections of pegaptanib and was followed up for 3 months or longer. Results:Improvement in visual acuity was significantly better in 27 eyes with occult-type AMD than in 31 eyes with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy. Visual acuity tended to improve in eyes with smaller lesion without hemorrhage or edema. There was no severe ocular or systemic complication throughout. Conclusion:Visual acuity was maintained in 68% of eyes following intravitreal injection of pegaptanib. Improvement in visual acuity was more pronounced in early-stage AMD including occult-type AMD.
