Abstract. Purpose:To report the outcome of 25-gauge vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment. Cases and Method:This retrospective study was made on 74 eyes of 74 cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachment who received 25-gauge vitrectomy during the past 21 months. The series comprised 57 males and 17 females. The age ranged from 21 to 80 years, average 56 years. Cases were ruled out when retinal detachment was associated with macular hole, diabetic retinopathy, or proliferative vitreoretinopathy. All the eyes received additional gas tamponade with sulfur hexafluoride. Lens was removed in 57 eyes(77%). Cases were followed up for 3 to 21 months, average 7.6 months after surgery. Results:The retina became reattached in 70 eyes(95%)after initial surgery and in 74 eyes(100%)after multiple surgeries. Visual acuity averaged 0.26 before and 0.7 after surgery. Transient ocular hypotony below 8mmHg developed in 8 eyes(11%). Conclusion:25-guage vitrectomy for rhegmatogenous retinal detachment is safe and effective.
