Abstract. We performed vitreous surgery for diabetic retinopathy in 21 eyes of 18 patients. The age of patients ranged from 50 to 78 years, averge 64.6±10.4 years. The postoperative findings were evaluated 2 to 6 months, average 3.3±1.3 months, after surgery. Another series of 15 eyes that did not receive surgery served as control. Fluorescein angiographic findings were compared before and after surgery. We examined only the area along the raphe temporal to the fovea as the object of our study. After surgery, microaneurysms in this area decreased in 9 eyes, unchanged in 8 and increased in 4. These values were the same as in controls. Capillary nonperfusion in this area decreased in 7 eyes, unchanged in 9 and increased in 5. In the controls,it decreased in none, unchanged in 10 eyes and increased in 5. There was a significant difference in the incident of decrease between the two groups(p<0.05). The findings show that vitreous surgery for diabetic retinopathy may not induce differences in capillary microaneurysms and a decrease in capillary nonperfusion.
