Purpose:To review the visual coutome after surgery for bilateral congenital cataract in children aged four years or over. Cases:This study involved 24 eyes of 12 patients who received surgery at the age of 4 to 10 years. The series comprised 5 boys and 7 girls. Their age averaged 6 years 7 months at the time of surgery. All cases were followed up for 2 years or longer. Esotropia was present in 2 cases. Nystagmus was absent. Cases were excluded who showed abnormal electroretinogram or funduscopic findings,or who could not be evaluated as to visual acuity due to mental retardation. Intraocular lens was inserted in 13 eyes of 7 cases. Results:Final visual acuity was 0.5 or over in all the 24 eyes and 0.8 or over in 20 eyes. Conclusion:Good visual acuity was obtained after surgery for bilateral congenital cataract in children aged four years or over without nystagmus.
