We performed Molteno implant surgery for primary open-angle glaucoma in 10 eyes of 7 patients in the past 5 years. The series comprised 5 males and 2 females. The ages ranged from 28 to 73 years, average 52 years. Patients had received an average of 2.1 sessions of trabeculectomy and had been receiving an average of 3.7 eyedrops and 0.8 peroral medications. The intraocular pressure(IOP)ranged from 23 to 50 mmHg,average 32.8±9.5 mmHg prior to surgery. After an average of 772±555 days of follow-up,the IOP averaged 14.7±4.0 mmHg treated by an average of 1.56 eyedrops and 0.11 peroral medications. There was no statistical difference in the survival rate between single and double plate type Molteno implant. The findings show that Molteno implant surgery promises to be of value for refractory primary open-angle glaucoma when due attention is paid to complications.
