The purpose of this study was to elucidate the prevalence of nonspecific neck pain in the general population and to investigate its characteristics. The subjects consisted of 525 people, including 193 males and 332 females with a mean age of 61.9 years. Their age, gender, medical complications, other sites of pain and the results of the EuroQoL (EQ-5D/VAS) questionnaire were also recorded. The prevalence of nonspecific neck pain was determined and a statistical analysis was conducted to compare those with and without nonspecific neck pain. The prevalence of nonspecific neck pain was 51.0% (268/525 subjects). The highest incidence was in subjects in their thirties and younger, and the incidence decreased with age. The subjects with nonspecific neck pain were most commonly female, with complaints in their back, lumbar and wrist. In addition, patients with nonspecific neck pain showed lower EuroQoL score, and no correlation was observed between the presence of nonspecific neck pain and medical complications.
