The short-term surgical outcome of thoracic pedicle screw fixation for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) was investigated in comparison with that of surgery with conventional hybrid construct. In 20 patients AIS was treated by using pedicle screws alone, and in 12 other patients screws, hooks, and sublaminar wires were used. The correction rate for the main thoracic curve was 72.9±10.9% in the pedicle screw group, and 62.3±9.3% in the hybrid group (p=0.01). The results for the self-image domain in the SRS 22 questionnaire were significantly better in the pedicle screw group. Transient paraparesis and intercostal neuralgia were observed in one patient each. Pedicle screw fixation is an effective option for surgical treatment of AIS from the standpoint of short-term outcome.
