Purpose:Because of the difficulty in verifying the reproducibility of grip strength, consensus has not been reached regarding its measurement. We determined the effect of posture and elbow position on grip strength and its reproducibility. Methods:40 healthy subjects were evaluated three times using a Smedley dynamometer in four situations;standing with fully extended elbow, standing with 90° flexed elbow, sitting with fully extended elbow, and sitting with 90° flexed elbow. Results:Maximum grip strength was obtained standing with fully extended elbow and minimum sitting with 90° flexed elbow except for nondominant women, in whom reproducibility was high in all four situations. Conclusions:Although different posture and elbow position affected grip strength, high reproducibility was maintained. Those requiring continuous measurement should thus be measured routinely with consistent posture and elbow position.
