 The number of patients with lumbar vertebral canal stenosis has increased, and it has recently become the most important lumbar disease. The purpose of this study was to conduct attitude survey regarding lumbar spinal canal stenosis among the general public. The subjects were 561 members of the general public aged 70 years or older (mean age:74.1 years) who voluntarily filled out the questionnaire. There were 269males and 292 females, and the numbers of subjects by district were:Tsu City, 267;Kumano City, 138;and Tokyo, 156. The results revealed that only 6.1% of the subjects lumbar spinal canal stenosis. Thus, it may be important to inform the general public about this disease. The results of this study also disclosed that the majority of subjects aged 70 years or older intend to consult a physician if they have difficulty going out, and to urdergo surgery if they become unable to walk without stopping ater 100 meters or less.
