Previously we have demonstrated that cells of oligodendroglial lineage express non-N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) glutamate receptor (GluR) genes and are damaged by kainate-induced Ca2+ influx vianon-NMDA GluR channels of the α-amino-3- hydroxy-5-methly-4-isoxazole propionate (AMPA) type, representing oligodendroglial excitotoxicity. We here present the finding that ibudilast, which is used clinically for treat patients with asthma and cerebrovascular diseases, prevents oligodendroglia excitotoxicity.
