The authors have reported the clinical applicationof the computed tomography for the diagnosis ofthe intracranial lesions and the spinal cord lesions.

The computed tomographic scanner used in theanalysis was the ACTA scanner (Automatic Com-puterized Transverse Axial Tomographic scanner),among several mechanical characteristics of whichthe usefulness of the color display system and theability as a whole body scanner were examined. As for the color display system, it was not alwaysnecessary to detect the lesion itself in the cranialcavity. But it was superior to the grey scale dis-play for the diagnosis of the lesions at the base ofthe skull which were obscured by the high atten-uation of the skull and the accompanying streakings. The color display system was also useful to detectthe lesions close to the skull which were superim-posed by the high density of the evershoot. Lastlythe color display system was combinient to visualizeat once the distribution of the attenuation gradientof the large mass without printing out the atten-uation values.

As mentioned above, the color display systemwill offer the more informative data than the greyscale display system and its selected application tothe clinical cases will lead to more precise diagnosis.

As for a whole body scanner, the probability ofthe clinical effectiveness for the diagnosis of thespanal cord lesions was especially examined. Thehigh density lesions such as neurinomas or the lowdensity lesions such as syringomyelia were welldetected in the spinal canal. The results of theACTA scanner in the diagnosis of the spinal cordlesions could sometimes offer more informative datafor the diagnosis than the air myelography.
