  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

In carotenemia, the yellow-coloring of skin and the gastrointestinal and psychiatric symptoms pre-cede the neurological symptoms. At first patients complain muscular pain, dysesthesia and burning sensation in fingers and toes which gradually pro-gress to complete the clinical picture of sensory disturbance of polyneuritic type. The neurological signs are observed to parallel the degree of caro-tenemia and to be reversible.

Since polyneuritic signs is experienced to be worsend by overloading of alimentary carotene and is slightened or alleviated by reducing alimentary carotene, pathogenesis of the polyneuritic sensory disturbances are assumed to be due to carotenemia. Etiology of the carotenemia may also be related to abnormality of intrahepatic transport of carotene from our electron-microscopic studies of the liver cell.
