  • Look Inside

Arachnoid and pia mater of dogs were examined with transmission and scanning electron microscope in order to study the fine structure of C. S. F. pathway on the brain surface.

The animals were killed by perfusion of mixture containing 1% glutaraldehyde and 1% paraform-aldehyde through heart.

The arachnoid is composed of arachnoid cells and collagen fibrills, however, no vascular element is revealed within it. The intercellular junctions are tight at dural side, although, loose at arach-noidal side of the arachnoid membrane.

The component of the pia mater are pial cells, collagen fibrills and macrophages with pial vessels. The pial cells show various shapes. Fenestrations between pial cell processes or abscence of pial cells are ocasionally encountered.

These structures are attractive to investigate the exchange mechanism of the cerebrospinal fluid at the brain surface.
