  • Look Inside

A case of intracranial infiltration of adenocar-cinoma originated in external auditory canal was reported. The patient was a 49 year-old man. He had been suffering from earache, discharge and hardness of hearing for 10 years, and the swelling in the right external auditory canal was noticed 5 years ago.

A pathological diagnosis of adenocarcinoma was made by means of biopsy on Jan. 1967. And then he was treated by "Co irradiation. On Dec. 2, 1967, he came to our hospital with a complaint of progressing disturbance of consciousness. Neuro-logical and radiological studies indicated the space occupying lesion in the middle cranial fossa. Partial removal of the intracranial tumor and decom-pression were performed on Dec. 20, 1967.

Infiltratory adenocarcinoma was proved by pathol-ogical examination. The patient died from pulmo-nary complication II days after operation. With autopsy it was revealed that the tumor was located in the right external auditory meatus, and invaded to the intracranial space through the pyramidal bone.

The neoplasm is extremely rare, even in otological references. The reports of surgery against the in-tracranial infiltration of this tumor could not be found in neurosurgical literatures.
