  • Look Inside

Ten cases of intractable pain due to various dis-ease under neck level of the body have been treated by in trathecal perfusion of frozen physiological saline. The present method was based on the ex-perimental results that the action potential of Aδ and C-fibers at intradural dorsal root responded to nox-ious stimuli disappeared and primary afferent de-polarization was altered following perfusion of fro-zen saline. The technique is simple and safety. At the first, the spinal fluid is spontaneously withdrawn (20-40 cc) and frozen saline is injected (30-60 cc) through lumbal puncture needle. This procedure is reported two or three times in two weeks. It is not necessary to keep special position and bed rest for long period following the injection.

Intractable pain is completely relieved during in-jection. No demonstrable sensory deficits and no bladder complication have been noted except by-poalgesia by pin prick test by one or two post-treatment day. There is no serious complication.
