Amitriptyline was administered to 30 cases(8 men and 22 women) of depressive states (11 endogenous depressions, 10 reactive dep-ressions, 4 anxiety neuroses, 2 hypochondrias, 1 mixed psychosis, 2 schizophrenias with de-pressive nuance).

1. Among 30 cases, 10 (33%) showed mar-ked, 6 (20%) moderate, 8 (27%) slight impro-vement and 6 (20%) no inprovement.

2. Of the 11 endogenous depressions, 5 (45.5%) showed marked, 4 (36.4%) moderate and 2 (18.1%) slight improvement.

3. Of the 10 reactive depressions, 3 (30%) showed marked, 2 (20%) moderate, 3 (30%) slight improvement, while 2 (20 %) were un-changed.

4. The effective therapeutic dose was 75 —150 mg. daily, by mouth, and it was more effective to be administered over 3000 mg. in total dose for 5-9 weeks or more.

5. Side effects of this drug were not so-serious and less than those of phenothiazine derivatives.

6. Amitriptyline was effective in the treat-ment of depressive states and symptoms such as depressed mood, anxiety, tension, feeling of inferiority, psychomotor retarda-tion, retardation of thinking, etc.
