  • Look Inside

A case of cryptococcus meningitis, histo-pathologically verified, was reported.

A 59-years-old man complained of head-aches since three years, followed by sudden onset of encephalitic symptoms associated with pyrexia, headache, nausea and conscious disturbance, and he died one month after the onset of the encephalitic symptoms.

Macroscopically, slight clouding of pia ma-ter was shown.

Microscopically, perivascular infiltration of lymphocytes with round cells, histiocytes, epitheloid cells, phagocytes and giant cellswas found all over the subarachinoid cavity, particulary on pia mater, having organism among these cells. Such change extended into the cerebral cortex along blood vessels, and tubercle like nodule was present with lymphocytes, histiocytes, epitheloid cells and giant cells around blood vessels of the under-lying cortex, markedly localized in Virchow-Robin's space. While cerebral destructure was slight and cortical structure was also well maintained, there was in cerebellum widespread necrosis, which supposed to be followed by vascular change.
