  • Look Inside

Of 1231 cases of various intracranial diseases which were treated in the First Surgical Divis-ion of the Kyoto University Hospital from 1940 to 1950, there were 14 cases, in which tempor-ary or persisting hiccup was noticed. They were 8 tumors, 3 epilepsies, 2 head injuries and 1 vascular lesion.

The lesions were situated beneath the ten-torium in 7 cases (group 1) and above the tentorium in 7 (group 2).

The hiccup took place in most cases without any incentive, but sometimes it followed pneu-moencephalography.

1) In the group 1, 6 were tumors which were located within or in the neighborhood of the fourth ventricle. The remaining one case was a vascular lesion. In all cases of this group consciousness was never disturbed.

2) In the group 2, there were: 1 glioma of the posterior part of the right lateral ventricle, 1 meningioma of the olfactory groove, 2 head injuries, and 3 epilepsies. Characteristic is that the hiccup in this group appeard in ass-ociation with mere or less disturbance of consciousness.
