  • Look Inside

The writer devised a new staining method for oligodendroglia.

It was a matter of common knowledge that oligodendroglia could not be selectively stained. By the writer's stain, however, oligodendroglia in normal or nearly normal brain can be brou-ght out selectively. In abnormal brain in which other gliacells, espesially microglia, increase, oligodendroglia and microglia are ,stained at the same time. For instance, they are stained together in the brain of general paresis. As to this kind of unusual of microglia in staining, the writer interpreted like Cajal as the result of dislocation of chronologic phase of microglia to that of oligodendroglia.

Comparing the findings obtained by this method with observations made hithertofore such as Penfield and Cone's acute swelling, the writer reported a peculiar degeneration of oligodendroglia. By this degeneration, tie de-ndrites swelled enormously in the shape of a globule, although the pericarion was nearly normal.

The following shows the impregnation me-thod: 1) Prepare frozen sections of formaline fixed material 25 micron thick.

2) Wash in water.

3) Place in a 5 per cent solution of potassi-um cyanide for 30 minutes.

4) Carry through two changes of distilled water.

5) Place the section in the following silber-solution for 2 or 3 secmds, as rapidy as possible: Add ammonia into 10 per cent silber nitrate solution drop by arop until opalescent.

6) Reduce with a 10 per cent formaline heated.

7) Wash in water.

8) Tone in gold chloride; fix in hyposulphite; dehydrate; clear; and mount in balsam.

The writer also related to a new microglia and macroglia impregnation method.
