  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

The skull has been trephined since remotest antiquity, but the surgeon was always very careful not to penetrate the dura mater for fear of meningitis. Intervention on the brain itself had to await the development of aseptic surgery by Lister and the beginnings of our knowledge of localization in the brain by Fritsch and Hitzig. Then a tumor was localized by Bennett, by inference from the symptoms alone, and partilly removed by Godlee. This operation, in 1884, launched the modern era of brain surgery.
